I'd be against special characters in names, as other players would find it rather difficult to type them for the purpose of sending a PM or report.

As long as they'll put in æ, I'll be fine,... Lols ^^.

But srsly, accents and special letters should be included,... There's a difference between Rene and Rénæ,... Being, the last one's one I would use xD.

As for Single Names, for the Love of God, NO!
Sucks.
Srsly.

Just copy/paste them... Just like we already do with asian names.

/signed for special characters which are part of language.
Ie, 's, accents, -s, æ... But not # or @.

That's more a problem with support and the like, rather than actual names themselves : (

That said, I think it'd be pretty cool to have to only choose a first name, just as long as capitals (capitols?) only exist in the first letter. Possessive's would be a plus, too, just as long as there's a limit.

But yeah I'd much rather see this in GW2.

A bit OT, but I had to go onto that point:

Can#t you really imagine, that there are far easier ways to invite other players, then to write ever extra carefully their names ?

Don't you think, its much easier, when an Invitation requires of you just only to right click a player - then to see a little Window pop up with different choices like:

- Open private Chat to
- Whisper to
- Invite into Party
- "Invite into Guild" (when allowed to you)
- Trade with
- Coordinate Dance with (insert other social Emotes, like Kissing, Hugging ect., which sent to the other player a request box, if you like to get kissed/hugged whatever XD

and and and... the possibilities would be great, when GW2's interactive gameplay with other players would be so improved and that with a much better and easier to handle UI, which would get used, like the UI of a normal PC (for imagination, just move your mouse over "Start" and over "All programms" to get it, what I mean ^^)

Why make everything harder, than neccessary, if its so easy to handle lots of features about Emotes and Actions with other players in such a standart PC UI with Windows popping up, when needed and automatically disappearing agaim, once something out of it got selected and the wibndow automatically opens per right click, or quick double click on a character

I don't play WoW, but as far as Single name names go:
Uhm - Koss?
Melonni?
Dunkoro?
Rurik?

Hell, everyone but Players in GW is a single name character!

Example:

i register a Character with the Name XXXXX YYYYYY

at start the option I suggested is deactivated, so all people will see, if they mark my character the name XXXXX YYYYYY.

now I go into the menu, click the button mentioned, activate the feature and from now an, all people who mark my character will see only XXXXX.

- No Prenames, that are shorter, than 3 letters

- No Prenames that consist 2-3 times in a row the same letter and are not longer than 5 letters

- No tripple or longer names through double/multiple spaces > max 1 space for surname

- Insert multilangual accents, meaning making it able to give characters names with ' or the french e's ect. so that people who want to, CAN create real fantasylike looking medieval names, stuff ala

Huor Táralóm
Fëanor Amandil

ect pp. only with such apostrophes and accent letters you can really create names, that sound and especially look fantasy like.

- insert "-"'s ,otherwise no ASCII stuff, like *,/,+, ;, <,>, |,\, [, ], (, ) ect.

Just ensure in GW2, that characters will have all names, that really sound and look like names

just my 2 cents
Phoenix, I agree with you on this. I also think that you should be allowed special symbols and that there should be a "click" function for report, etc, so names don't have to be typed.

Mate, this topic is ABOUT PLAYER NAMES.

So yeah, my point still stands, I guess,...

LOL

So, for some reason, only players have to have 2 names? Why?

Greater avaliability of names. If we were only allowed one-word names the name ppol would dry up pretty fast (particularly for people who like acutual names for their characters).

Also, it may just be laziness on ANet's part, I mean, Koss does have a last name but it's not part of his profile (probably because of a falling out with his father). Would you actually give every single NPC a first and last name? A middle name? I beleive in the beta the hench had surnames, but they were removed for some reason, perhaps to save space.

Where does it say you'd be limited to only 1 name? The request is that we be allowed to use only 1 name if we so choose.

And there are NPC's with first and last names, both in GW and in other RPGs. Yeah, its a lot of work. Again, though, the request is to be allowed to create names as we would prefer - with accents and variations and so forth. It's all part of the customization of my character, no less than the appearance. If I come up with a cool single name for a character, why not? (And I prefer not to have to get around the limitation by doing the J O H N thing, or X John X.)

Yup.

I'm distracted at the moment, trying to level up a Pokemon.

I was talking based on games where you're only allowed a single-word name, as the previous poster (not you) mentioned. I know this topic is about variation, that's why I signed it.

I think 2 names is to give more options for names. You can be Soultaker Badbutt and another person can be Soultaker Littlewind. So lots more people can be Soultaker. You want a specific name that is taken then add to it a bit and you can probably have it too, ie Soultaker Littlewind I. Remember there are lots of players and lots more characters the names have to go around.

Because most common names get taken really quickly and if you only had single names it would get really hard and frustrating to pick new names for your characters n your account after a while.

I still get the "This name is alrady in use by anothwr player" message every now and then when thinking of new names for characters for PvE, and that's with two names.

As for allowing the use of special characters in names... no way!

/notsigned

Only thing I do think we should have is the character limit extended a bit more. I've thought of some great names before that were over the limit by 1 or 2 letters which is saddening.

For that, a better interact system should be added.
Replace the 'Trade' button with an 'Interact' button, that would pop showing the options:
- Trade
- Whisper (Sends name to whisper panel)
- Ignore
- Add Friend
- Join (If you are alone selecting a member of a party)
- Invite (If you are the party leader)
- Kick (If you are the party leader)
- Invite to Guild (If you are an leader of official)
- Report

You are a Spanish speaking player with a tilde in your character name. I am in your friends list, as we have played together many times. Your character is in Lion's Arch. I am in my Guildhall, talking with my guild leader. I had suggested you join my guild, as you needed one, and mine did the things you liked to do. You whisper me, as ask if you can get an invite. I am not an officer, so I have to ask my guild leader (or an officer) to send you the invite.

My guild leader does not know how to use the tilde symbol to be able to type your name. Neither do I, and I don't even have you in my Friends List How do I get you an invite sent to my guild?

Too much of a problem. People should not have to be required to learn a new language function for thier computer just to interact with people. I'm just glad I have never had to communicate with an Asian character through whispers, or invite a guild with asian characters to my alliance.

Since you are whispering him, just ask him to whisper your guild leader, or meet in Lion's Arch.

You want one name?

Why?

And why on earth would you disallow phrases as names?

None of these points really make sense.

And only Koreans can use special characters. That's how it should be forever and always. I definitely love that.

That problem exists ALREADY with Korean, Taiwanese and Japanese names.

But it's easily solved with two words: Copy Paste.
Names of characters would be able to be copied, by 'Shift-clicking' on them. Both chat names in the left and chat names post in the chat log.

Guildie selects <character>, click the button and chooses 'Whisper'.
Guildie copies <character name> from the Whisper name textbox.
Guildie pastes <chracter name> in the chat panel:

Guildie: Please add <character name>
Leader: Ok.

Leader shift click <character name>. Name is copied to the Whipser textbox.
Leader can then copy and paste it anywhere.

See? Things work when you think about it.
